Tango Salon Championship in Hong Kong  7-8 June 2013

Tango Salon Championship in Hong Kong is inviting entries from argentine tango dancers in Asia for the 2013 argentine tango competition in Hong Kong on 7 and 8 June. It is the first time that Hong Kong has a championship for argentine tango.  It is also the first subsidiary competition of the Asian Tango Championship in Tokyo and officially affiliated with World Tango Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina.   This event not only sets a milestone in the local development of argentine tango, but also is a perfect testimony to the vibrant development of Hong Kong cultural scene.

Argentine tango originally developed in Buenos Aires in 1890s.  The tango-mania then conquered Europe where its alternative form, ballroom tango, emerged.  Argentine tango, unlike ballroom tango, has a different form of embrace with improvisation as the essence.  In 2009, UNESCO inscribed argentine tango in the list of intangible cultural heritage.  Its development in Hong Kong dates to the mid-1990s. Over the years, the local tango community expands with more local dancers give classes and run milongas (dance parties). Now we have milongas nearly every night, forming a significant part of the diverse cultural scene. This event offers upcoming tango dancers a unique chance to reflect on their own technique and stylistic preference. It also demands a comprehensive understanding of tango music as the contestants are required to improvise to music disclosed only before the competition starts. Dancers from all Asian countries are invited to participate. Online registration is now open until 15 May 2013.

As the officially affiliated competition, winners of the open category will accede directly to the semi-final of the Asian Tango Championship in Tokyo. They are entitled to two round-trip tickets from Hong Kong to Tokyo and accommodations for joining the Asian Tango Championship in Tokyo.

There are 2 Categories : (1) Open Category and (2) Novice Category. Participants from Hong Kong and all Asian countries are welcome.
